We displayed posters saying 'KEEP CALM & CARRY ON' taken from a WW11 campaign,
in most of the town's shop windows in Feb 2009.
We have had huge coverage in local press, local radio and national press.
The story and town was featured in the Guardian, Telegraph with a follow up series of interviews by The Times.
BBC2's Working Lunch reporter also came to town and interviewed several shopkeepers.
The town has remained buoyant with new independent and national businesses taking the place of some that failed. (e.g. Woolworths).
Off the Walls (Local art in Shops)

Businesses allocate space to sell local artwork, creating 'an art gallery that never closes'.
Work is specified to fit in with the time of year and enhance trade and quality of life.
Sales can be shared so that the artist gets 80%, the venue 10% and the local arts foundation 10%. A simple website could also be created, to show the available venues and artist's work for clients to select.
This promotes local artists and participating businesses get paid for use of their wall space and a new to engage with their customers, and it makes the participating businesses much more than 'just another shop'.
Cycle Maps

We have developed cycle routes for the region and these have been produced as maps available locally and on line.
As a result, we have seen increased numbers of cyclists coming to the town, especially at the weekends, and this has helped all the retail businesses by increasing customers.
This is a really good example of how an under-utilised local asset (nice places to go cycling) can be used to grow footfall in a town.
Themed Halloween Night
| Region: | South East |
| Population: | 5,001 - 10,000 |
| Cost: | Under £100 |
| Time to Set Up: | 3 - 6 months |
| Time it Ran For: | Under 3 months |
| Income Generated: | £501 - £1000 |
On Halloween night we organised a special event in the tower of the local folly and it's surrounding woodland.
Over 360 people turned up, most in Halloween dress, and enjoyed the decorations, a fantastic
light show, the scary music and the Rat Catcher who 'lives' in the Lantern Room at the top of
the Tower. Many revellers then went on the other events in the Town.
Again, this uses an under-utilised local asset (the local folly) to increase footfall in the town, in a really fun, memorable way.
Shop Local & Shop Doctor
| Region: | East Midlands |
| Population: | Over 20,000 |
| Cost: | Over £5000 |
| Time to Set Up: | Under 3 months |

This is an extensive Shop Local scheme with many elements and related competitions.
The most interesting and valuable point learned, was that the most successful aspects were the tool kit that was established for traders and workshops for retailers which enable them to help themselves.
The workshops led by a 'shop doctor' were described as inspirational!
Local Food Festival
| Region: | South East |
| Population: | 10,001 - 15,000 |
| Cost: | £1,001 - £5,000 |
| Time to Set Up: | 3 - 6 months |
| Time it Ran For: | Under 3 months |
| Income Generated: | £1,001 - £5,000 |
This was a local food festival which incorporates how the food reaches the table with exhibitions of things like hurdle making, food trails, farm animals and cooking demonstrations.
The first year taught us many lessons for the second year and businesses have sustained increased footfall as a result.
People are now asking about the next one and the number of stall holders requests already takes us to more than double last years total.
This shows that residents and visitors are actively interested in local food and how it's produced. And many, many market towns have innovative, interesting local producers that would actively contribute to this type of event.
Snow Machines
| Region: | South East |
| Population: | 15,001 - 20,000 |
| Cost: | Under £500 |
| Time to Set Up: | Under 3 months |
| Time it Ran For: | Under 3 months |
| Income Generated: | £5,001 - £10,000 |
When we couldn't afford new Christmas lights we introduced Snow machines around the village to encourage people into the village on the quiet December Saturdays.
The festive feeling increased the spending in the pubs and restaurants and for Christmas items in shops.
People now come from all over Southern England for our 'snow'. Best of all some have returned in the summer for holidays.
Themed Walking
| Region: | York & Humber |
| Population: | 5,001 - 10,000 |
| Cost: | Under £100 |
| Time to Set Up: | 6 - 12 months |
| Time it Ran For: | Over 12 months |

This is a major walkers initiative based on the Pilgrimage of Grace.
We have many established footpaths that roughly follow the route of the Pilgrimage, taking in at least one priory and we want to liven up the walking experience!
With the long local history that many parts of the UK have, this confirms how simply highlighting and theming some local walks can 'create' an attractive feature in a market town for residents, visitors and their families.
The interesting walks already exist - it's just a question of raising their profile and tapping into local history.
